A shot for Pendleton Whisky for FWV. The background was the challenge on this shoot. I started by staining some new wood and it just didn't look right. I ended up "finding" an old pallet and taking it apart. We ended up cutting holes in the wood to get light up into the bottle.

A recent shoot for Men's Fitness Magazine. In every issue there is a feature called Success Story where they showcase a reader that has lost a substantial amount of weight. I got to photograph Sean Harrison of Ironcore Fitness in Greenville NC.
Tech Spec's. - Profoto 1200,600. I tried the ringflash but it flattened out all the muscle and definition. Soft front fill, with hard side and back light.

A recent shoot for Family Circle Magazine. The story was about a teen girl who cultivated a once neglected piece of property into the Chapel Hill High School Community Garden. The final image that ran was the big one, top left. After I shot it, I knew I had the shot but I always like to supply the photo editor a ton of options.

Oh deer, It was great to get a call the other day from CFO Magazine. I got to go up to Madison, NC to Remington Arms Company to photograph some of the Corporate Finance people. I was given a 30 min. window in which to photograph 2 people. Nothing fancy about the nondescript outside or inside of the the building, cubicle land. After grabbing a few props off the wall we headed outside to a field next door. I really like when Art Directors say do something different, there are to many boring financial portraits. The people at Remington were good sports and went along with the concept.
Tech-Spec's - Had to deal with peak-a-boo sunshine, these images are from the 2nd set-up. AB 800 and 400.

As part of the “Vegetarian BBQ tour” I was fortunate to photograph Pitmaster Ed Mitchell. Ed is one of the most humble, genuine and honest people I’ve ever met. We met at Ed’s old restaurant in Wilson, N.C. The restaurant will soon be home to a new culinary school and museum. In the dining room there is a mural that wraps around the wall, it’s a story of Ed’s chilhood life, and was painted by an autistic employee. Ed has a secret ingredient he put into everything he cooks. I know it sounds corny, but it’s love.
It was fascinating to hear Ed’s stories of his rise to fame, being named a Pitmaster, having Iron Chef Bobby Flay challenge him to a throwdown and winning. hanging out with Anthony Bourdain at his pig table. If you run into Ed, say hello and be prepared to listen and be entertained. Look for big things coming from Pitmaster Ed Mitchell.

Tech Spec’s. - We showed up at the restaurant with the usual location kit, Profoto 600/1200 packs and 6 heads. Guess what ? No power. I was fortunate I’d thrown the AB vagabond, 400/800 heads in the car. Always be prepared. For the shots in the kitchen we opened the doors to let some light in and dragged the shutter @ 1/8.

My big project this year was going to be Transformus. A Burningman sanctioned event in the mountains outside of Asheville NC. I'd been planning the trip since Jan. and built a mobile studio. I planned on spending 5 days in Mysteria with a group of fellow campers in Bubble Camp and 2000 other people. Sometimes this don't go as planned. I left at 4 AM Wed. morning and spent 3 hours at camp and had a family emergency and had to return home. I did get off one shot.

On April 16th a tornado touched down and went through part of downtown Raleigh. I count my blessing, the tornado came over the top of my studio. My building was built in 1929 and held together, most of my neighbors were not so lucky. I was without power for 3 days.

A recent shoot for NEA Today Magazine. Leonardo Williams runs a band program that has engaged kids -- particularly low-income -- in school and arts. It's great to see someone so energetic and excited about teaching. When he started there were @ a dozen kids in band, now there are almost 100.

I had a knock on the door this week, it was Reverend Bruce from the church 3 blocks from the studio. The church was starting a boxing school for trouble youths in the neighborhood "The School of Hard Knocks". He want to know if I'd take some pictures for him. I'd been shooting products on white all week so any excuse to get out. I grabbed a pack and 3 heads, 2 locations in 2 hours. I was happy with the results.
