Raleigh NC Editorial photography - Lincoln Memorial

The other day I had a shoot up in Washington DC for a client, well almost DC in Fairfax. I was really bummed when I drove in and didn't even see the top of the Washington Monument. The shoot wrapped up and I made it to the hotel @ 11PM. Here I was in DC, almost and haven't seen any monuments. I got a wake up call at 6 AM, took the metro @ 10 stops and got off in Foggy Bottom. I walked down 23rd street to the Lincoln Memorial. Every time I've been to the Lincoln Memorial, there have been hundreds of tourist, but today was different. It was still early, I had the place to myself except for the janitor and occasional jogger. It was a very powerful thing to just stand in the memorial, by myself. I hope to take my kids up to DC before the start of the school year so they can experience all the monuments.

Raleigh Editorial photography Animazement

My project from Animazement is online.
I had no idea what Animazement was, but it was 10 blocks from my studio. So, I grabbed my camera and a couple of lights and decided to check it out. It was nice to shoot for myself and just for fun. Next year I’m going to buy a ticket and really check it out. Maybe someone will send me on assignment to Fetish Con, if the wife will let me go.

Went out over the weekend and shot some images for my Speedway project. It's been over a year since I've been to a track. I'm still not sure what direction this project is going and not sure it's really going anywhere. Portraits ? Candids ? Environment ? I've got a ton of great images but not sure how they relate to each other. Think I'll continue to shoot and see if something comes together.

The Nature Research Center opens today

This evening The Nature Research Center opens at the NC Museum Of Natural Sciences. This morning I stopped by to do my “Morning view” and it got me thinking of all the other times I’ve stopped here.
For the past ...... Hmmmm... almost 3 years I’ve stopped and taken a photography on the way to my studio in the morning. I post this on my Facebook page under “Morning view”. I’m not quite sure why I started doing this. Maybe it was for some creative freedom, no art director or client telling me what to do, no photo editor telling me to shoot horizontals and verticals. Yes, I think it
was about having some creative freedom, to just shoot for the pure joy of shooting. Some days I shoot one image other days maybe a couple hundred. I’m excited in the morning when I get to the studio, like the old days, when you’d get your film from the lab and put it on the lightbox for the first time. My “Morning view” has taught me a lot about available light. If the light is right you can take a picture of anything and make it look great. I know people are calling it the Daily Planet, but it will always be the Death Star to me.

Editorial assignment for Sportsnet Magazine on the biggest UNC fan. I got to shoot at the Dean Dome at UNC Chapel Hill. My intention was to strobe him and the gym. I had my location kit, 5 profoto lights and 2 AB's, not nearly enough light for such a large space. I ended up shooting available light to capture the size of the venue.

My photography for NC Public Power / Taste of Carolina calendar won a silver Addy award. It was a great project to be involved in. The creative team at Electricites mafe me feel like a valuable member of the team. The Taste of Carolina campaign picked up a total of 7 Addy awards. It was a fun project to be part of and I will never eat another hushpuppy again. You can find out more about the project at the Workbook Blog.
