The Bain Project

I volunteered for The Bain Project the other night, some random snapshots. Got to hang out with SHAWN ROCCO who is turning the photojournalist community upside down with his cell phone images check it out at PDN Pulse.

Triangle Addy Awards

The Pro bono work continues. Did some grip and grin shots for the Triangle Addy Awards. First time I've been to the DPAC, what a great space, I'll be back tomorrow for some uplifting inspiration from Morrissey. It's always great to hang out with other creative people. I didn't enter anything I'm the biggest procrastinator, Oops the CA deadline was last week. Nothing I shot won any awards but I had some stuff hanging in the show Capstrat Eaton Corporation, Jennings Truliant and Crittenden for AKC. Rumor has it things are picking back up, which is good news for everyone in the industry.

Vegetables that start with the letter "A"

This is a revisit from some stuff I shot years ago, a series of vegetables that start with letters of the alphabet. I'll be moving onto "B" bananas, beets and broccoli . I used some small fresnel light with gels and flashlights for light painting and a 30 sec. exposure.

confidentiality agreement

Seems like the last few things I've shot have come with a confidentiality agreement ........ Oh well .....

Portraits of Raleigh update ......

Got the kids in bed early on Friday and ran down to the Raleigh City Museum for the Portraits of Raleigh show. All kinds of great work hanging on the walls and being projected. I need to track down some folks. I got an honorable mention of my imagine of "Sandra and the Opera Singer". Imagine my surprise when I saw the Art & Living section in the N&O Sunday morning, I am truly flattered.

In Print Field of Beer

Some shots that made it to print from the World Beer Festival, it was all a blur ....... Sorry to say it was in the last issue of NC Signature Magazine. The publication has come to an end. I'm disappointed, I thought it was a great magazine and very contemporary for NC, It fit my shooting style well. Maybe it will make a come back when the economy pick back up. Think I'll go have a beer or two.

In print Retro

Shots that made it to print from recent post. NC Signature Magazine.

Almost got kicked by a horse

Working on some editorial images with horses out in Louisburg. It's been awhile since I've been around horses, I forget what type these were but they were "runners". As soon as the gate was open they took off like a lighting bolt. Really cool to feel the ground tremble beneath my feet.

editorial

Out and about shooting some editorial images. Soft box and 2 reflectors on each shot.

nc art museum

Driving by the nc art museum the other day and light was really nice so I had to stop and shoot some photos. The image on the bottom left was shot back in 2002 when they were in the process of tearing down Polk Youth Center.

Tips from the Pros

I was getting @ 2 calls aday for awhile, from companies asking if I wanted a plaque from my magazine feature ??? We'll I finally got the magazine Our State and saw the write up. Thought it was pretty cool and got a 2 page spread. No I'm not getting a plaque.

Dance Dance Dance

Shot some dance stuff the other day. I got so caught up I forgot to do any set-up shots. Some of my favorite were just the ambient light dragging the shutter and getting some blur.

In Print

Some shots from older post, that made it to print ......

Jim Long

I was fortunate to cross paths with Jim Long (1940-2009) when I did some work for the NCDOI. He was no nonsense and straight to the point, I don't think he liked having his photo taken but was a good sport with all the fuss made over him. I know he looked out for the regular joe as the NC commissioner of insurance. My condolences to his family and friends.

Radiology

Afew days hanging out shooting Radiology.

Good Bye Popcorn

Part of the dressing room was a nasty popcorn ceiling. Time for it to come out. I knew a C-stand was good for something ....

Go Steelers

I might have to pop the top of my 1976 Steelers Super Bowl Champs Iron City can as I enjoy the game this weekend.

I'm so depressed .........

I'm so depressed ......... In this day of doom and gloom the one thing going strong is the pharmaceutical industry. A shoot for Major Depressive Disorder. Final image will be dropped into a stock shot of a crowded street. Crazy lighting set-up to match the stock shot. Might have to bust out the ceiling one day, almost ran out of room. Big thanks to Karen from Directions USA hard to get a good depressed look when everyone is cutting up. As always big thanks to Angie stylist extraordinaire Face Artistry

2 days 2 Legends Bill Clinton

I stumbled into this from a friend I've known since JR. High, William Beaty over at Beaty Creative. Not quite as cool as hanging with the White House Press and secret service when Bush was in town ( B&W photo's below). Alot of fun. Clinton can light up a room and turn on the charm, he has a larger than life presence. He was like a machine. I'm sure he dose these fund raisers all the time. For $4600 you get a photo with Bill , lunch and a speech. You can see the shoulder of the secret service agent on the left, I might of been alittle aggressive about having my photo taken with Bill. I had to do it, my mom can't stand the man and this will make a great Christmas card for next year.

2 days 2 Legends Jim Erickson

The Pro bono Gods call once again. It's that time of year for the Triangle Addy's (Southern Fried Advertising) with AIGA Raleigh and the AAF-RDU. I always have a hard time saying no. I was a real honor this year one of the judges was Jim Erickson . If you don't know who he is just look at the back cover of any CA. I'd met Jim about 13 years ago when he had a FAT studio in Raleigh, I'd moved back from Vegas and was looking for assistant work. Needless to say I never heard back after I'd shown my book. I've followed his career for years and am inspired by his work. There were so many question I wanted to ask but never had the chance. The judges were swapped. There was a great list of talent for judging, saw some great reels and great stories from Matt Checkowski,Carole Hurst,David Crawford and Dave Smith.

ice ice baby

The snow melted and I still had that chilly feeling. Don't know why but I got my fake ice cubes out. I had a vision of high contrast and really crunchy blacks. No matter what I tried I couldn't get it. I ended up doing some sloppy light painting (No hose Master just a Mag light ). Ended up shooting some random objects lying around the studio. Think it will make a nice series. Had some peg board left over from a shoot for Duke and tried few things.

Random snow shots

Some Random snow shots from around downtown.

Snow

Snow !!! This was the first good snow in almost 5 years. I got to play hooky from work and it was a blast. My girls age 4 and 6 had never played in snow before. We are all thawed out and life is back to normal after 2 days of no school.

Cement Plant

I pass by a cement plant on my way into work everyday. I was coming in early the other morning and it was very foggy so I stopped to snap some shots. The fog didn't really show up ........

out in the field literally

We were trying to match some existing photography, the original images were shot on an overcast day. Today was bright and sunny and cold ...... Outside from 8AM to 3PM. Got some great shots and some fun life style type images.

television constipation

Did some shots for a television constipation add. All be put together in After Effects.

Inner Peace with Ray

Shot some stuff for a book on Inner Peace. There are 30 people all over the world for this project. Dr. Ray Blanchard happened to be in my area. From what I understand, his view on Inner Peace can only be achieved when you are dead. That's why we ended up in the graveyard.

Eugine stops by

My neighborhood buddy Eugine stopped by, he just got out of prison. He was upset because they let him out on the coldest day of the year, he said he might commit a minor infraction to get back in, he doesn't like staying in the homeless shelter. He had a pretty big bump on his head, said the cops did it.

tennis anyone ?

Some quickie shot for a local client. Had to break out the Profoto ring-flash.

Oral History

Up at UNC for an editorial assignment on the Southern Oral History program.

Wake Rad

Back out at Wake Radiology trying to finish up some shots. I can really make a headshot set-up fit anywhere .......

cardinal club

I was up at the cardinal club the other night shooting some grip and grin stuff for Merrill Lynch or is it Wells Fargo ? Great view of the downtown out the window.

Post it Notes on Hold

My Post it Note project is on hold. Back to the grind after the holidays, I'm booked the next 7 days in a row. All different shoots and clients. Getting gear together and packing. I hope this is a sign of what 2009 will be like.

No time for TIME Photoserve

So I get one of those calls photographers dream about the other day. Not National Geographic but TIME Magazine. They want me to go down to Fort Bragg and shoot some photo's for a story. I was double booked that day and no way I could've made it. I am so bummed. I'd updated my Photoserve Portfolio at the start of the New year with environmental people images, that's were the photo editor found me. I'm going to go cry myself to sleep.

875 Post it Notes

Working on some personal projects over the holidays. Why Post it Notes ? Who knows..... but I had alot of them lying around the studio. It took almost 2 hours to cover the wall.

Drive by

Some buildings I drive by everyday, I finally got out of the car and snapped some shots. I don't think they'll be standing much longer.

Alien Skin

Hooked up with the guy's down the street at Alien Skin (thanks Jim). I'm going to test drive some software and hopefully become a Beta tester. I'll post some files when I get a chance.

Business Leader Eran Salu

Yea ...... The check has finally arrived. It's been over a year since I shot the 2 jobs for Business Leader and Triangle Realestate. Its been a learning experience on how people behave and the court system works. I hope I never have to go through this again. It was always more about the principal than the money but it's nice to get paid.

3 is the magic number - Inspiration from anything

I came in to work the other morning and someone had lined up 3 pennies, 3 matches and 3 cigarette butts in front of my studio door. They were arranged in nice little symmetrical piles. I'm sure it was some of my homeless buddies just goofing around. I'm usually slow between Christmas and New Years and work on studio/equipment/taxes/archiving etc. but now I had some inspiration. Groups of 3's ...... Think it made a nice little series .......... Last post of 2008. Bigger and better things to come in the new years and maybe I'll even finish some personal projects.

In Print

Some published images from past post ..........

street shots

just some random shots from walking around my neighborhood.

left over from painting the floor

I must say the studio always look great with a new coat of paint on the floor.

field of dreams

Made it out to the sod farm for our shoot on Menopause. Glad it was warmer than normal in Dec. A big thanks to the agency Directions and Angie for make-up and styling at faceartistry
It got cloudy towards the end of the day and some rain, but lots of great shots.

Eran Salu Business Leader court update

Yea !!!! The check is in the mail, says the NC clerk of courts. This is an update from going to court
Of all the post I’ve done this one seems to be the most popular. I’ve gotten over a dozen
emails and phone calls from people in NC, NJ, FL and as far away as India who believe they
are owed money by Eran Salu and Business Leader Media ( Business Leader Holdings LLC
incorporated in Las Vegas ).
This was never about the money but, the principal. I could of been paid right away, if I’d
signed away my rights to 6 years of photographs for Business Leader Magazine,
but I decided to go through the legal sysyem. The jobs were shot back in Oct. 2007
and Nov. 2007
the wheels of justice turn slow.
For everyone who has contacted me, all I can say is persistence pays off. Stay the course, keep all your records and don't give up. Knowing I can collect,
I’m now pursuing my copy right infringement case. I’m fortunate to have family and friends
that work for UNC law. I’ll keep you up to date on how that goes.

Hanging with Kanye West ?

Not, I was hanging with Jamel. Who kinda looks like Kanye West. I meet Jamel about 3 years ago when he was producing a record for Terrance and we did a shoot for the CD. Now Jamel is out from behind the mixing board and doing his own thing, think of Luther Vandross with alittle hip-hip mixed in. Jamel has so really good connections so I can't wait to see what happens when hid disk comes out. I did my best Jill Greenberg rip-off lighting.

last minute catalog

Some last minute catalog shots of wine accessory. Had to wait almost a week to get the outdoor shots because of all the clouds and rain. I ran out to the arboretum for the outdoor shots, It was 27˚. I was lucky to find a patch of green grass.

Annual holiday floor painting

Getting to be that time of year. The Annual holiday floor painting ...............

back in southern pines

I was back in southern pines to show the funky, fun and hip side of the town for an article coming out in the Spring. The only problem was I was the youngest person their. It was like a retirement home and everyone had on a Christmas sweater .......
Maria and the band were great, think I got some good detail shots that might work.

Bricks

Some studio shots for Triangle Brick. Just an archive of bricks for new print adds.
